Python, Cracked Ice, Rhinestone, & RFS area
This huge area of terrain is one of the most classic zones on Thompson Pass, and for good reason: it hosts several iconic Chugach ski and snowboard destinations like the east aspect of the prominent 6094′ peak known as Python (Cherry Couloir, Maraschino Chutes, Lower Hanging Fruit Chutes), the prominent 6513′ peak Rhinestone Cowgirl that has incredible alpine climbing routes up its north ridge (best in winter) and south ridge (best in summer), RFS (6041′), and Cracked Ice (a prominent 6300′ peak).
This area stays relatively sheltered from the wind. When many other areas have been severely wind-affected, it may have surprise pow. With the access point at ~1700′, it takes some time to become accessible after the summer trail has been buried (usually between late September to mid October) but the brush hasn’t yet been covered enough to maneuver through with skis. That said, it is one of the earlier areas to open up that isn’t near Thompson Pass proper (2678′). It’s typically accessible by mid December, although some seasons as early as mid November. It often provides quality corn skiing on solar aspects and dry powder on northerly aspects well into May.
