Guided Alaska Backcountry Skiing & Ski Mountaineering Trips & Courses

fly-in (via ski plane) expeditions to remote wilderness areas few have ever visited

CMI works with several air charter services throughout the state for fly-in trips and can provide you with unique Alaskan alpine touring and ski mountaineering experiences in pristine wilderness areas.

Destinations include the Chugach (Western, Central, Eastern, Northern), Kenai, and Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska Range, Brooks Range (Gates of the Arctic National Park & Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), Wrangell-St. Elias National Park (its four major mountain ranges), and Lake Clark National Park (Alaska & Aleutian ranges: Neacola & Chigmit mountains).

Fly-in trips via ski plane are a fraction of the price of heli skiing, are much more sustainable in terms of carbon footprint and environmental impact, and heli skiing is prohibited in Alaska’s national parks and designated wilderness areas.

These trips also include skills instruction: glacier travel, crevasse rescue, avalanche safety, snow camping and technical mountaineering.

Fly-in trips afford a profound wilderness experience. Rates start at $750 per person, per day and include professional guiding, instruction, charter flights, all group camp and kitchen equipment, meals and snacks, and coordination of travel logistics.

CMI provides the best guided Alaska backcountry skiing and snowboarding experiences. Call/text 907-831-9686 or email Info@ChugachSnow.org for inquires and availability.

Fly-in trips and courses are available statewide March through May.

In April, fly-in day and multi-day trips are available from Valdez (round trip flights or fly-in, ski out back to the road).

CMI also offers exclusive, fly-in Rec Level 1 & Avalanche Rescue, Rec Level 2, Ski Mountaineering, and Expedition Skiing courses (with nationally recognized American Avalanche Association course certifications). Email CMI or call/text 907-831-9686 for inquiries, availability, and to set up a one of a kind course with skills instruction in a spectacular fly-in destination of your choosing.

This is the best option for a late season course, as flying in provides access to higher elevation terrain that can still have a relatively dry, winter-like snowpack late into the spring. These courses include glacier travel and crevasse rescue instruction, and more technical instruction for ski mountaineering can be added.
