Billy Mitchell area
Mt. Billy Mitchell (7217′) is one of the highest peaks in the Valdez, AK area Central Chugach. It is the highest peak along the road corridor that cuts through Thompson Pass. Its massive false north summit (6856′) and glaciated cirque is framed perfectly by the Richardson Highway road cut when driving south towards Valdez, just before the highway ascends to the pass.
The true summit, at the head of the Seal Glacier, only has a few known ascents. It has only two known ski descents: one via the NE ridge and one via the NW ridge (by CMI’s Mat Brunton as seen in the video below).
While climbing and skiing from the true summit is a very big and challenging objective, the Billy Mitchell massif provides numerous other more accessible skiing opportunities. While not an area for novices, if you can ski black diamonds you should be able to enjoy the terrain this area has to offer.
