Diamond area
The Mt. Dimond (aka Diamond) area on Thompson Pass in the Valdez, Alaska area Central Chugach is likely home to some of the most concentrated, easily accessible steep chute and couloir riding in the world. For the most part, these lines can’t be landed on top of by heli ski operations (which run March through April) and sled (aka snowmobile) access is impossible early to mid season and complicated even in the spring at peak snowpack depth. Thus, it’s a great area for non-motorized, human-powered skiing and snowboarding.
The classic “Gun Barrels” lines from near the summit of Diamond are in this zone, along with dozens of 800-2000′ chutes and couloirs that range in aspect from NE through NW. The lower north facing slopes of this zone are gladed with spruce, alder, and willow. Low angle powder skiing with 2000′ runs is often excellent on the Diamond area lowers.
