Fosse to Lakina (Oz Traverse) Backpacking

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve

First known as a challenging Alaskan whitewater packrafting route that I completed in a 3-day walk-in beatdown from Kennicott in 2013 (that included a rowdy class 3+/4- high water float of the Lakina River back to the McCarthy Road), the backpacking portion of the trip has more recently become a standalone Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve classic.

It offers varied terrain, challenging and exciting hiking, some of the best camping in the park, and two spectacular bush flights. While the route can be completed by fit and experienced parties in as few as three day without too much rush, CMI recommends a six day trip to fully experience the “Land of Oz.” That many days will provide plenty of time to search for the elusive wizard…

If you want a longer, more varied, and challenging route; check out the Fosse to Kennicott or Lakina to Kennicott options. They’re very affordable extended trips. For the most affordable backpacking option (no bush flights), check out the Donoho Wilderness Sampler (a loop from Kennicott). For an easy, or family-friendly option, check out Fosse Basecamp. Check out the main Wrangell-St. Elias trip page for even more options.
